Large Terraced Wall, with stone steps
This job was one of my more memorable ones, since the owner allowed me to use all my creativity. What started out as a simple retaining wall soon became very complicated due the amount of ledge and water that was discovered upon excavation. My suggestion was to follow the natural lines of the ledge, which was exposed at differing levels. A beautiful set of stairs were also required for access to the upper yard area.
I wound the wall along the ledge and worked the stairs into a graceful curve that worked with the landscape. Drainage was necessary to keep water from ponding behind the wall, which would increase the risk of the wall heaving during the long cold Vermont winters. To finish the lower area, sod was laid to create a soft, cool, green patio in contrast to the warmth and solid mass of stone.
