Catamount Stoneworks -- Stone Path

The Stone Path

This great old home needed a walkway that clearly said "Welcome", but that would be able to endure the occasional passage of the plow truck in winter. Drainage here was also a problem since the roof shed huge amounts of water onto the compacted earth.

French drains were installed at the drip edge and piped into drainage pipe that traversed the walkway and exited into a lower section of the property. My son is seen here placing the stones into a bed of fine sand. This allows us to tailor fit the irregular stone to the ground and makes the stones very stable with no rocking motion.

Once again the style of the mason comes into focus. My landscape training always stressed the fact that angles and straight lines are not inviting. Unless an owner clearly has their mind set on angular installations, I always find a graceful way to wind a walkway onto a piece of property that invites your neighbors to come calling.
